At JMJ Gardens, we approach full-scale landscape renovations as a conversation with the land. Using native plantings and pollinator-focused design, we shape outdoor spaces that follow the contours, light, and natural patterns already present. The result is a landscape that feels seamless and unforced, as though it emerged from the site itself.

The pool sat at the center of the property, a defining element awaiting a landscape to give it form and presence. The client envisioned this space as the home’s hub, a gathering place that needed structure, balance, and a sense of flow with the home and its grounds. Every decision was guided by their intent to create an environment that felt purposeful, welcoming, and in harmony with the home.
The placement of key elements such as the pool, seating areas, and pathways was considered carefully, so that moving through the landscape would feel intuitive and natural.

The site presented a formidable challenge: shallow soil over solid ledge, strewn with rocks that had to be carefully pried and removed to prepare the ground. Thoughtful excavation and shaping allowed us to work within these constraints while addressing a critical drainage concern, ensuring water flowed naturally through the space.
Every adjustment was guided by the client’s vision, transforming a difficult terrain into a foundation that could support both structure and planting with ease and elegance.

Once the site was prepared, we enriched the planting areas with deep, fertile loam to improve drainage and create a resilient foundation for the landscape. Plant selection was guided by the conditions of the site—species that could thrive in wetland pockets, withstand full sun, and remain largely untouched by deer. We positioned plantings along the exterior of the fence to provide privacy, create a layered sense of depth, and allow the landscape to extend seamlessly into the pool area.
Every choice was made to ensure the garden felt intentional, cohesive, and naturally integrated with its surroundings. Thoughtful repetition and variation in plant forms guide the eye across the property, while subtle shifts in height and texture create a rhythm that unfolds as one moves through the space.

To ensure proper water management, we carved a three-foot-wide channel along the edge of the fence and filled it with 3/4-inch gravel, creating an unobtrusive yet effective drainage system. With the foundation in place, we began planting inside the fence, selecting a mix of perennials and shrubs that would provide continuous blooms throughout the summer months, perfectly timed for poolside enjoyment.
Each plant was placed with intention, balancing color, texture, and scale to create a vibrant yet harmonious composition that complements the surrounding landscape. The planting design was crafted to enhance the pool experience, framing views, softening edges, and inviting lingering throughout the season.

The plantings were chosen not only for resilience but for their rhythm and presence throughout the season. Native hydrangeas and oakleaf hydrangeas provide lush blooms that evolve over summer, while ninebark introduces rich red tones and dogwood offers structure and form. Clethra adds fragrance, arborvitae contributes vertical height, and blanket flower brings bursts of vibrant color. Groundcover and edging plants such as creeping phlox and thyme create a soft, continuous carpet, complemented by the late-summer blooms of echinacea and black-eyed Susan.
Together, these selections create a layered, dynamic garden that shifts subtly with the light and seasons, enhancing both the poolside setting and the broader landscape.

With the design fully realized, the landscape flows effortlessly around the pool, creating a space that is at once inviting, functional, and deeply harmonious with its surroundings. Over the summer, the client was able to fully enjoy the garden, moving from pool to patio to plantings with ease, enveloped by color, texture, and seasonal bloom. The arrangement of plantings, pathways, and sightlines created moments of quiet retreat as well as lively gathering, allowing the outdoor space to feel both intimate and expansive.
Beyond immediate enjoyment, the project gave the client a clear vision for the rest of the property, showing how thoughtful design and careful placement can guide the evolution of the landscape over time. It is a space that now feels settled, purposeful, and open to the next chapter of the garden’s story.
