Regrading, Rebuilding, and Reviving Yards In Exeter, NH

At JMJ Gardens, excavation is never just about moving earth—it’s about renewing the ground your home rests on. We correct failing grades, rebuild soil that can truly support growth, and design drainage systems that quietly carry water away before it becomes a problem.

Every detail is shaped with restraint and purpose, so the finished landscape feels seamless, enduring, and naturally protective of the structure it embraces.

When we arrived at the property in Exeter, the front yard was unsettled and uneven. A recently removed tree had outgrown its space against the house, and after the stump was ground down, a large mound of roots and wood chips was left behind. The grade pitched toward the foundation, trapping moisture where it didn’t belong, and the remaining soil was loose and sandy—far from capable of supporting healthy turf.

The conditions called for deliberate regrading, nutrient-rich compost to rebuild the soil structure, and a carefully designed drainage system to restore balance and safeguard the home long term. Over the course of the project, we removed two truckloads of poor-quality material, clearing the way for a solid, healthy foundation for the lawn and landscape. With the site cleared, the next phase focused on reestablishing proper drainage and replenishing the area with rich, supportive soil.

With the site cleared and prepped, we focused on installing a drainage system to protect the house from water damage. Trenches were carefully routed around the foundation and filled with 3/4” stone, creating channels that efficiently carry water away and prevent pooling near the structure. To further safeguard the home, we set a row of cobblestones in concrete along the edge, forming a durable, finished border, and then filled the area with 3/4” Mystic Stone. This layer not only creates a polished, low-maintenance surface but also protects the house from water splashing onto the siding, ensuring long-term durability and a refined, completed look.

By combining function and beauty, the stonework seamlessly integrates with the landscape while keeping the foundation dry and secure through every season.

With the drainage and stonework in place, attention turned to rebuilding the lawn and preparing it for new growth. We spread a generous layer of nutrient-rich compost over the regraded areas, carefully working it into the sandy soil to improve structure and moisture retention. Low spots were smoothed and high points adjusted to create an even, level surface that would allow water to drain properly without pooling. Every detail was attended to, from raking and smoothing to firming the soil, ensuring a stable foundation ready to support fresh seed and healthy, vigorous grass.

With the ground fully prepared and leveled, the next step was to sow new seed and bring the yard to life.

Once the soil was fully prepared, we seeded the lawn with a carefully selected native grass blend designed to thrive without irrigation and withstand the local climate. This approach not only reduces maintenance and water usage but also encourages a resilient, natural landscape that supports pollinators and local wildlife. By using native species, the lawn blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment, creating a harmonious balance between beauty, function, and ecological responsibility. Over time, the yard will grow lush and healthy, offering the homeowners a vibrant, low-maintenance space that feels rooted in the land and alive with life.

The completed project leaves the property not only protected and functional but also thoughtfully restored, reflecting JMJ Gardens’ commitment to landscapes that endure and inspire.
